Fall Risk in the Elderly:
Safety Precautions You Can Take

Falls are one of the biggest fears for elderly people and their loved ones. In the elderly, falling is among the most common causes of injury. As our loved ones age, their physical balance and mental abilities may decline. This makes them more vulnerable to accidents. Preventing fall-related accidents not only prevents injuries but also helps our elderly maintain an independent life. So, how can we protect our loved ones from this risk? Here are some simple but effective precautions we can take against the fall risk in the elderly.

SECURE THE HOME

First, walk through every part of the elderly person's home and check:

  • Are the rugs slipping?
  • Are there obstacles on the floor that could trip someone?
  • Are there non-slip mats on wet surfaces?
  • Is there adequate lighting everywhere, especially in corridors, kitchen, and bathroom?
  • Are there grab bars in the bathroom and toilet?
  • Is the toilet seat high enough for comfortable sitting and standing?
  • Is there a constantly lit lamp in the corridor at night?
  • Do the chairs have armrests to hold onto when sitting down and getting up?
  • Are electrical outlets at a height where hands can easily reach?
  • If there are stairs, are there handrails for support?
  • Are the corners of furniture sharp?
  • Are items easily accessible?
  • Is the bed height appropriate?
  • Do slippers have non-slip soles?
  • Is the clothesline low enough not to require reaching up too high?

Make adjustments and arrangements related to these. Install grab bars where necessary to prevent falls in the elderly. Pay extra attention to kitchens and bathrooms while doing this.

ENSURE REGULAR MEDICAL CHECK-UPS

It's very important for elderly individuals to have regular doctor check-ups. This way, doctors can identify vision problems, muscle weaknesses, and potential side effects of medications that could cause dizziness.

EXERCISE IS A MUST

Encourage your elderly loved ones to do age and condition-appropriate exercises for their health. Some people avoid movement for fear of falling. However, this doesn't prevent falls. On the contrary, staying active is necessary to remain balanced and strong.

SLIPPERS AND SHOES ARE ESSENTIAL

It's important to wear slippers and shoes with non-slip soles that fully support the foot, and not to walk barefoot.

BE CAREFUL WITH MEDICATIONS

Medications your elderly loved ones use may trigger dizziness and nausea. Observe the side effects of current medications and new ones prescribed by the doctor. If necessary, ask the doctor to change the medication.

INCREASE AWARENESS

Some elderly people think they can move as freely as they used to. One of the most important steps in reducing fall risk in the elderly is increasing awareness. Discuss with them which movements carry a risk of falling and what precautions they can take. Follow developments and information from reliable sources and share them with your loved one.

SHOULD GET SOCIAL SUPPORT

Elderly individuals shouldn't be socially isolated. Social support positively affects their physical and mental health. Encourage them to stay in regular contact with family members, friends, or neighbors. Social activities can also help maintain mobility and overall health in elderly individuals.

NUTRITION IS IMPORTANT

Balanced nutrition and adequate fluid intake play an important role in maintaining muscle strength and overall health. Ensuring that your elderly loved ones eat regularly and healthily can help reduce the risk of falling. Since vitamin and mineral deficiencies can also increase the risk of falling, make sure they're getting necessary supplements with doctor's advice.

THE PRESENCE OF A HOME HELPER

If your elderly relative needs help with daily activities, consider getting a home helper. Having a helper at home and home care services allow elderly people to maintain their independence while feeling safe. Getting professional support for elderly care means great relief not only for the person receiving care but also for family members. Knowing that your loved ones are in safe, friendly hands gives you peace of mind.
