It's time to unplug our babies!

It's time to unplug our babies!

Actually, it’s best to never give them at all! Unfortunately, seeing babies with cell phones in their hands has become a common sight these days. The phones we give them to calm them down, distract, or occupy them have negative effects on their development. So, why should we keep babies away from cell phones? Here are some scientific reasons that will convince you...

There are numerous studies examining the relationship between screen time and the development of children and babies. These studies show that excessive screen time at an early age negatively impacts children’s language development, motor skills, social abilities, and academic success. Particularly for babies, there are serious concerns that cell phone usage, or any screen exposure, could harm brain development.

STUDIES ON CELL PHONE USE IN BABIES

A study conducted by Common Sense Media in the U.S. in 2017 found that 38% of babies under the age of 2 had already used a tablet or smartphone. This accounts for more than a third of young children. Since the study was done in 2017, the situation is likely much worse today.

Another study by JAMA Pediatrics in Chicago in 2020 revealed that 75.3% of children under the age of 2 exceeded the recommended daily screen time limits. A 2023 study by the same organization found that by age 9, this could have a significant impact on children’s cognitive development. Let’s not forget the radiation babies are exposed to from these devices.

In another study conducted in the U.S. in 2021, 39% of 1,000 surveyed parents admitted to giving their children cell phones to keep them quiet. We don’t know if there has been a similar study in Turkey, but when you walk around or sit in a restaurant, you’ll definitely notice small children glued to screens. Because “there’s no other way to keep them calm.” Let’s be honest, we’ve all done it.

WHAT DOES EARLY SCREEN EXPOSURE LEAD TO? SCIENTIFIC FACTS

Developmental Delays in Babies: The early years are a critical period when babies’ brains rapidly develop and they begin learning by interacting with their surroundings. Playing with real objects, exploring the environment, and engaging with people are much more important for brain development than looking at a phone screen.

Risk of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Excessive screen time at an early age can increase the risk of ADHD in children.

Sleep Problems: The light from screens can disrupt babies’ sleep patterns, leading to sleep issues.

Delays in Social Skill Development: Babies develop social skills by interacting with other people. Looking at a phone screen reduces these interactions and delays social development.

Eye Health Problems: Looking at screens from close range can negatively affect babies’ eye health and lead to vision problems such as myopia.

Psychological Effects: Prolonged screen exposure during phone use can lead to psychological issues in babies, such as anxiety and depression.

EXPERT RECOMMENDATION: ZERO SCREEN TIME BEFORE AGE 2

Whether it’s a cell phone or any other screen, we’re surrounded by blue light everywhere—TV screens, tablets, laptops... The same recommendations apply to all. Here’s what experts suggest regarding cell phones for babies:

  • It’s perfectly normal to want to resort to a phone to calm your baby sometimes. But as much as possible, give them toys instead. Toys help babies develop their senses and motor skills.
  • Play with your baby while holding them. Babies feel secure and happy when they experience physical contact with their parents.
  • Introduce your baby to nature. Spend time in parks, gardens, or play areas at home to allow babies to explore the natural world.
  • Read books. Reading to your baby supports their language development and enriches their imagination. It also helps them speak earlier.
  • Limit screen time: The more we restrict something, the more appealing it becomes. Instead, set reasonable limits based on age. By limiting screen time, you can encourage babies to engage in healthier activities.

The best learning experiences for children come from touching, feeling, and exploring. Screens are, of course, a part of our lives, but they cannot replace the real-world experiences children need as they grow. So, how about starting today by setting limits on screen time?
