Differences Between Dementia and Alzheimer's

The terms "dementia" and "Alzheimer's" are sometimes used interchangeably, but these two conditions are not the same. Alzheimer's is a type of dementia.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a broad term with symptoms such as memory loss. This comprehensive definition includes Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions. The causes, symptoms, and treatments of these diseases can vary.

Alzheimer 's Disease and Risk Factors

Experts have not determined a single cause for Alzheimer's disease, but they have identified specific risk factors:

Age: Most people with Alzheimer's disease are 65 years or older.

Family History: If immediate family members have developed the condition, your risk is higher.

Genetic Factors: Certain genes are linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Having these risk factors does not mean you will develop Alzheimer's; it simply increases your risk level.

Alzheimer and Genetic Relationship

While there is no distinct cause for Alzheimer's, genetics can play a significant role. Researchers are particularly interested in the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, associated with the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms in older adults.

Blood tests can determine if you carry this gene, increasing your risk. However, having the gene does not guarantee you will get Alzheimer's.

Conversely, someone without the gene may still develop Alzheimer's. For now, it's uncertain whether someone will develop Alzheimer's.

Other genes can also increase the risk of Alzheimer's and early-onset Alzheimer's.

Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease

Everyone experiences forgetfulness from time to time, but people with Alzheimer's display worsening behaviors and symptoms over time. These may include:

– Memory loss affecting daily activities, such as keeping appointments.
– Difficulty with familiar tasks, like using a microwave.
– Challenges with problem-solving.
– Trouble with speech or writing.
– Disorientation about times or places.
– Decreased judgment.
– Decreased personal hygiene.
– Mood and personality changes.
– Withdrawal from friends, family, and community.

Symptoms vary according to the disease stage.

Stages of Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, meaning symptoms worsen over time. It is divided into seven stages:

  • Stage 1: No symptoms, but early diagnosis based on family history may occur.
  • Stage 2: Early symptoms, such as forgetfulness.
  • Stage 3: Mild physical and mental impairments, often noticeable by someone very close.
  • Stage 4: Mild Alzheimer's, with evident memory loss and difficulty performing daily tasks.
  • Stage 5: Moderate to severe symptoms requiring help from loved ones or caregivers.
  • Stage 6: Needing assistance with basic tasks, like eating and dressing.
  • Stage 7: The most severe and final stage, with potential loss of speech and facial expressions.
