Creating a Sleep Routine for Babies

Creating a Sleep Routine for Babies

To establish a sleep routine for babies, the mother or the caregiver should create a routine. The first year of the baby is the most suitable period for this. Children love routines because routines give them security. A routine for feeding, playing, and sleeping also supports their mental development. Creating a sleep routine can be more challenging for the mother compared to others. So, what should be done to create a sleep routine for babies?

Firstly, the mother or the caregiver should perform the necessary activities for the sleep routine regularly. Activities such as bathing, oil and massage, breastfeeding, burping, and singing lullabies while putting the baby to sleep should continue at the same times and in the same order every day. This way, the baby will fall asleep more easily, which will be convenient for the mother.

Pay Attention to the Following for Sleep Routine in Babies:

Adjust the temperature of the baby's room to 22-23 degrees Celsius.

The environment where the baby sleeps at night should be dark.

Do not use a pillow until the age of 1.

Feed your baby with less communication when they wake up at night. Because receiving too much stimulation (such as hugging or talking to them) can awaken them.

Make sure to burp your baby after breastfeeding.

After burping, put your baby to bed to avoid them developing a habit of falling asleep while sucking on you or being rocked on your feet.

Avoid placing your baby face down.

Do not overdress your baby, as they might sweat.

Sleep Routine for Babies According to Months

What should you pay attention to in which months for a certain sleep routine? Here are some tips.

Sleep Routine for Babies aged 1-4 months

It is not suitable to establish a routine for the first 40 days. You can start slowly establishing a sleep routine from the 6th week onwards. You can fully implement the routine by the 3rd month.

In the first few months, the baby should have their last nap of the day around 17.00 in the afternoon. After that, they should sleep around 20.00 in the evening. The baby should start learning the difference between daytime and nighttime.

You can dress the baby in the same pajamas for sleep to prevent different fabric textures from disturbing them.

In addition, we do not recommend a completely quiet environment for all babies. If your baby has gas problems, you will need white noise. This can sometimes be a hairdryer, or sounds prepared by musicians for this purpose.

Additionally, due to their own body movements in the first 4 months (Moro Reflex), you can swaddle your baby halfway to prevent them from waking themselves up.

Sleep Routine for Babies aged 4-6 months

These months are ideal for establishing a routine. You can reduce daytime naps to 3.

During these months, babies can sleep for 6-8 hours at night without feeding. You can reduce nighttime feedings based on the recommendations of a pediatrician.

If your baby wakes up early, let them continue lying in bed for a while to be able to fall back asleep.

Sleep Routine for Babies aged 6-9 months

You can reduce daytime naps to two during these months. You can also put your baby to bed for the night earlier. For example, you can put them to bed around 19.00-19.30.

Make sure that sleep routine practices do not coincide with changes in feeding. For example, transitioning to solid foods is an important period. Both routines should be at different times and should not overlap. Because new foods that the baby will encounter can affect their sleep. Therefore, do not give new foods during the evening meal.

Your baby may start teething during these months. This can affect their sleep routine and habits. They may have difficulty falling asleep again due to restlessness. Don't worry if your routine is disrupted. Your baby will get through this period too.

Sleep Routine for Babies aged 9-12 months

During this period, the baby may feel separation anxiety. This can disrupt regular sleep at night. To reduce this anxiety, experts recommend playing peek-a-boo during the day.

The baby should wake up from their daytime nap around 15.00-15.30 so that they can transition to the night sleep routine more comfortably. The bedtime can be around 19.00 in the evening.

For sleep training, babies should be fed at night only once or twice until they reach 1 year. You can also consult your baby's doctor about this.

Finally, keep your baby away from devices like television, tablets, or phones before putting them to sleep, as external stimuli can hinder their ability to fall asleep.
