Transition Period to Complementary Food in Babies

Transition Period to Complementary Food in Babies

Sena Bilgin Başak, Expert in Clinical Nutrition

The transition to solid foods is a crucial period in a baby's growth and development. This period not only encompasses the baby's physical growth but also aids in the development of taste sensations and maturation of the digestive system. Dietitian Sena Bilgin Başak outlines the characteristics of the transition to solid foods process and how families should manage it.

0-6 Months Period

For the first 6 months, a baby's most basic need is breast milk. Breast milk contains various components that support the baby's immune system while meeting all nutritional needs such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Recent research has shown that in addition to antibodies, breast milk contains stem cells up to 30%.

For babies who cannot receive breast milk, we recommend baby formulas that are nutritionally similar to breast milk for the first 6 months. In both cases, it is important to remember that the most valuable nutrient for feeding the baby is maternal love.

How Do I Know If My Baby Is Ready for Solid Foods?

The optimal time to transition to solid foods is generally around the sixth month. Babies' digestive systems typically become ready for solid/pureed foods mostly after 6 months. However, depending on the baby's developmental curve and readiness, you can start introducing solid foods at 4-6 months under the recommendation of a doctor.

Signs that indicate your baby is ready for solid foods include:

  • Showing interest in observing caregivers while they eat, smacking lips, or swallowing when watching them
  • Being able to hold their head up straight and sit steadily in a high chair
  • Being able to bring objects or toys to their mouth with their hands
  • Showing eagerness when offered food, opening their mouth
  • Generally, the disappearance of the tongue-thrust reflex, which is present in the first 6 months

How Should the Transition to Solid Foods Be?

Start with one meal consisting of 2-3 spoonfuls initially, gradually increasing the portions day by day, and depending on the baby's readiness, you should increase the number of meals from 1 to 4-6 meals during the 6-8 month period.

During the transition to solid foods, the method we most recommend for introducing foods is the 'Three-day rule.' For example, for the first three days, you can try mashed potatoes, the next three days mashed carrots, and then mashed zucchini. With this method, you should introduce foods to the baby one by one without mixing them, while also observing for possible allergy risks.

After trying vegetables, you should preferably continue with mixed vegetable purees or dense vegetable soups, yogurt, and finally fruit purees. If you start with fruit purees initially, babies may reject vegetables as they generally find vegetables less palatable. Therefore, after introducing vegetables, you can transition to fruit purees or fruit yogurts.

Foods to Avoid During the Transition to Solid Foods

6-8 Months Period

For transitioning to solid foods, starting with vegetables, yogurt, and fruit purees in the 6th month, you can gradually add egg yolk, meat broth, and cereals towards the end of the 6th month. In the seventh month, you can add minced meat to make minced meat and vegetable puree, and you can also introduce unsalted cheeses. By the eighth month, depending on the baby's intestinal condition, you can include fish and legumes (lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, etc.) by thoroughly cooking them.

Both during and after the transition to solid foods, selecting seasonal vegetables and fruits, preparing foods fresh daily, avoiding frozen foods, preventing any infections, and ensuring the highest level of nutrient utilization are crucial.

9-12 Months Period

Firstly, during this period, babies can consume homemade meals prepared without salt and spices. From the ninth month, you can gradually transition from pureed to chunky consistency. Additionally, you can introduce minced meat, meatballs, and vegetables during this month. You can encourage your baby to feed themselves, and during this period, you can apply the baby-led weaning method by cutting the foods into finger-sized pieces and placing them in front of the baby.

Foods to Avoid During the Transition to Solid Foods

During this period up to one year old, we do not add packaged products, milk, honey, high-mercury fish, deli meats such as salami and sausage, legumes such as fava beans, strawberries, kiwi, and egg whites to the baby's diet due to allergen risks.

Since babies' kidney functions are not fully developed until one year old, salt should not be added. However, after one year of age, you can offer foods with low salt content. Additionally, we strongly advise against sugar consumption until the age of two. The first two years are crucial for children to adapt to foods. Therefore, children who encounter sugar during this period may show less interest in other foods and may refuse to eat homemade meals.
