When Does Teething Occur?

Teething usually begins around 6 months of age and continues until the age of 2-3. The timing of teeth eruption doesn't necessarily indicate developmental issues.

Generally, we first see the lower front teeth erupting, followed by the upper front teeth and then other teeth gradually appearing. By the age of three, your baby should have all 20 primary teeth, which will remain until around 6-7 years old when they begin to fall out. This process continues until around 12 years old.

Signs of Teething

The signs of teething in babies can vary depending on their age, the speed of tooth eruption, and genetic factors. However, you may generally observe the following symptoms:

  1. Crying, irritability, and fussiness
  2. Sleep problems
  3. Redness, swelling, and tenderness in the gums
  4. Increased drooling
  5. Putting fingers or objects in the mouth frequently
  6. Increased saliva production
  7. Loss of appetite
  8. Slowed weight gain
  9. Constipation or diarrhea
  10. Low-grade fever

General Care During Teething

Problems Related to Teething

One of the most common issues is the sensitivity of the gums, which can cause pain and discomfort for the baby. This may lead to increased restlessness and crying. Additionally, gum inflammation is a common problem that can occur as a part of the teething process.

It's advisable to consult your doctor for this issue. Besides, appropriate teething aids can be used to relieve discomfort, but avoid water-filled aids as they can burst when bitten with force.

Also, mild fever is a common symptom during teething. If the fever rises, it's important to see a pediatrician without delay. Avoid giving any medication without consulting a pediatrician.

Solutions and Recommendations

Specially designed teething toys can help babies alleviate discomfort by providing relief to their gums. These aids should be made from safe materials that won't harm the baby. A chilled teething toy can help reduce gum pressure. Additionally, gently massaging the gums with your finger can help your baby relax and ease the pain. During the teething process, your baby may not want to eat or may eat less. Instead, they may seek comfort by breastfeeding.

Furthermore, although cold foods like chilled carrots or cucumbers may offer soothing relief, they pose a choking hazard if bitten into large pieces. Thus, parents and caregivers should be cautious.

General Care During Teething

It is important to pay attention to the general care of babies during the teething process. Paying attention to the baby's oral and dental hygiene will prevent tooth decay. Here are some tips for general care of a teething baby:

Clean your baby's teeth and gums gently using a soft toothbrush or a clean cloth wrapped around your finger. Nighttime cleaning should occur after the last feeding. Preventing tooth decay will also positively impact the health of permanent teeth that will emerge later on.

-Provide suitable activities during the teething process to distract and comfort your baby.

-Pay attention to your baby's diet. Ensure they consume adequate fluids and try to provide a well-balanced diet. Avoid forcing them to eat a food they refuse; instead, offer alternative options.

-Encourage your child's independence in brushing their teeth as they grow older. Toothpaste use can begin according to the recommendations of the pediatrician.

The teething process is just one part of the parenting journey. By approaching it with patience and understanding, you can help your baby navigate this period more comfortably and peacefully.
