Infant constipation

Infant constipation

Constipation is a common issue that can affect babies, especially after the introduction of solid foods. Babies may experience constipation, which can make them uncomfortable or distressed. Constipation in babies can stem from various reasons such as feeding habits, inadequate fluid intake, or lack of physical activity. The baby's intestines are still developing, which can contribute to constipation. In this article, we will discuss infant constipation, its causes, symptoms, and management.

What is Infant Constipation?

Every baby has different bowel movement habits. Some babies poop every day, while others do so less frequently. What matters most is whether the baby seems to struggle or strain during bowel movements. If there is straining, constipation may be suspected. The baby's behavior can also provide clues about constipation. They may have a hard belly or show signs of discomfort during bowel movements, such as being fussy or crying. The stool may be hard and pellet-like or may not come out at all. Additionally, straining can cause cracks in the anus, leading to bleeding. The baby might even refuse to eat. Therefore, overall discomfort is evident. However, constipation in babies generally responds well to treatment.

Causes of Constipation in Babies

Constipation is not usually encountered in babies who are exclusively breastfed during the first six months. We typically see constipation more often during the transition to solid foods, starting around the sixth month. Various factors can contribute to constipation. Foods containing rice, cow's milk, or those low in fiber can trigger constipation. Additionally, factors like insufficient fluid intake or infections can lead to constipation. Changes in the baby's environment, such as being in an unfamiliar place or extreme heat, can cause stress, which can invite constipation. Lastly, some chronic conditions may also cause infant constipation.

What Helps Relieve Infant Constipation?

When a baby is constipated, here's what parents and caregivers should do:

- Ensure the baby is getting enough fluids; some of this fluid can be in the form of fruit juice.
- During the introduction of solid foods, focus on providing foods rich in fiber. Purees of pear, dried apricots, or prunes are very beneficial for constipation.
- Gently massage the baby's belly with baby oil in circular motions. This stimulates the bowels.
- Move the baby's legs as if they are pedaling a bicycle. This exercise helps with gas and bowel movements.
- Applying glycerin and olive oil to the anal area can also be beneficial.

How Can We Prevent
Constipation in Babies?

- Do not introduce solid foods before 6 months of age.
- When transitioning to solid foods, offer purees rich in fiber from grains, vegetables, and fruits. Your pediatrician will advise on which foods are appropriate.
- Ensure the baby gets an adequate amount of fluids.
- Encourage leg movements that involve pulling and pushing towards the belly, or mimicking a pedaling motion.
- Perform gentle belly massages.

Constipation is usually a short-lived discomfort, but if it persists, it's essential for the pediatrician to examine the baby promptly.
