1. Camera Usage in the House: Be Clear

This is the first item on the list of things to discuss with your babysitter. If you have or are planning to install cameras in your home, make sure to inform them about it. Being clear is necessary for building trust. It will also help the babysitter feel more comfortable. If you ever have any suspicions about your child’s babysitter, the camera footage will reveal the truth. Don’t feel uncomfortable when mentioning cameras. After all, you would want to check in on your baby during the day, even if it’s with their grandmother.

2. Phone Usage and Screen Time

  • The babysitter should never leave the child alone to talk on the phone.
  • Keep phone calls short.
  • The babysitter should not use phones, tablets, or similar devices to entertain the child. If there is a limit, these devices can only be used for the period you’ve decided.
  • Additionally, the babysitter should not allow the child to watch content that includes violence, shouting, or other inappropriate material while the TV is on. Even young children can be negatively affected by such content.

3. Child’s Privacy: Diaper Changing and Clothing Rules

One of the important points to discuss with your babysitter is privacy. Make sure they respect your child’s privacy during diaper changes and when changing clothes. They should not do these tasks in front of neighbors, guests, or relatives. Share these sensitivities with the babysitter.

4. No One Should Enter the House!

The babysitter should never allow anyone into your home, as you are entrusting them with your child.

The babysitter should never leave the child alone in the house, even for a short time (for example, going to the store or market). Furthermore, the babysitter should not take the child outside without your consent. Even for a short trip, they should call you and ask for permission.

5. Nutrition: What Can the Child Eat? What Is Forbidden?

  • Make sure to inform the babysitter about your child’s eating habits and any allergies from the start. If there are allergies, extra care should be taken.
  • The babysitter should never offer any food without your consent.
  • If the child refuses a certain food, tell the babysitter in advance what alternatives can be given.
  • Also, they should not give junk food without your permission.

6. Routines Are Important: Sleep, Meals, Baths, and Activities

The babysitter should adhere to the bath, sleep, and meal times you’ve established. They should check on the baby while they are sleeping and observe if they are breathing comfortably in their sleeping position.

Additionally, prepare a list of activities that the babysitter can do with the child. Ensure that the necessary materials are available (e.g., drawing books, coloring pencils, books, etc.).

7. Smoking Usage

This is out of the question! Even if the babysitter says they don’t smoke, this is something that must be discussed at the outset.

8. What to Do in Emergencies

Inform the babysitter about who they should contact in case of an emergency. They should report any minor accidents immediately and not wait for you to come home in the evening. Additionally, prepare a list for them. They should know where the first aid materials are located and how to use them. Provide the contact details of your child’s doctor and keep it within easy reach.

9. Open Communication Is Essential

The babysitter should feel comfortable talking to you about anything without hesitation. They should not hide anything because they are afraid of your reaction. Provide them with reassurance. When saying "no" to a request to go out, remain understanding and calm.

Additionally, there may be moments when you don’t feel comfortable discussing certain rules. In such cases, you can say something like, "Dad is strict about this," to ease the situation.

10. Confidentiality

The babysitter should never share photos of your child on social media. They should also never disclose the location or address of your home to anyone.

Establishing clear and open communication with the person who will take care of your child will make things easier for both parties. By preparing a list of things to discuss with your babysitter beforehand, you will feel more comfortable during the conversation and ensure nothing is overlooked.
