Elderly Care During Seasonal Changes:
5 Critical Points for Caregivers

Sudden heat waves, abrupt cold snaps... The effects of climate change and rapidly shifting seasons impact individuals with weakened immune systems in various ways. However, the elderly are among the most vulnerable. Elderly care during seasonal transitions is a process that demands meticulous attention.

With the support of a caregiver, seniors can navigate these periods more comfortably. This is because their bodies become as fragile as delicate flowers during these times.

Therefore, there are points where elderly caregivers need to be more vigilant than usual as the seasons change. Here are the 5 most crucial ones.

1- BOOST THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Abrupt weather changes make the already weakened immune systems of the elderly even more fragile. For example, even a simple cough, if neglected, can lead to serious health issues. Therefore, supporting the immune system should be one of the top priorities for an elderly caregiver.

Nutrition:

First and foremost, the elderly's diet should be as colorful and diverse as a healing garden. Vitamins C and D, along with minerals like zinc and selenium, play a critical role in strengthening the immune system. Examples of foods that contain these:

  • Fruits and vegetables (especially citrus fruits, red peppers, broccoli)
  • Whole grains
  • Oily fish (salmon, mackerel)
  • Probiotic foods like yogurt and kefir

Also, adequate water intake is crucial for elderly care and the immune system during seasonal changes.

Hygiene:

Everyone needs to adhere to personal hygiene rules. This means both the elderly individual and the caregiver should wash their hands frequently. Additionally, keep the living spaces clean and well-ventilated. Especially after a visitor, make sure the room gets fresh air.

Sleep:

Sufficient and quality sleep is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. Caregivers and families can direct elderly individuals with sleep problems to light daytime activities. (Spending time with pets, engaging in a hobby, going to the park, etc.) This helps them sleep more soundly. Meanwhile, it's advisable to cut back on tea and coffee consumption from late afternoon onwards, as they can disrupt sleep.

2- MAINTAIN BODY TEMPERATURE

The mechanism that regulates body temperature works slower in the elderly. This makes them more sensitive to sudden temperature changes, causing them to get cold easily. When they feel cold, dress them in layers so you can remove an outer layer if they start to feel warm. If they get even warmer, another layer can be removed.

3- PROVIDE MORAL SUPPORT

As we transition into autumn and winter, the decrease in daylight can negatively affect the mood of many. Especially elderly individuals living alone may feel more gloomy and sad during this period. You can lift their spirits by chatting with them, listening to their memories, and showing interest with a smile. This reduces feelings of loneliness. In short, what they need most are love and compassion.

4- ENCOURAGE MOVEMENT

Cold and damp weather can trigger joint and rheumatism pains, leading to limited mobility. Learn light exercises that the elderly person can do at home from their doctor or physical therapist. If they attend physical therapy sessions, make sure they go to the healthcare facility without fail. Encourage them to move. Let them exercise to the extent their body allows. If they can go outside, take walks together. Both moving and getting fresh air, and a little break from the home environment will do them good. Of course, don't forget to take precautions to reduce the risk of falls while moving at home.

5- DON'T NEGLECT MEDICATION AND DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENTS

Seasonal changes pose a greater risk for elderly individuals with chronic diseases. Elderly people usually try to take their medications on time. However, as an elderly caregiver, double-check that they are taking their medications as prescribed by the doctor. If you observe any changes, inform family members and the doctor immediately. Also, keep track of doctor's appointments. Decide whether the family or you will take them, and ensure they don't miss any appointments.

In conclusion, caregivers and families need to be vigilant about elderly care during seasonal changes. By adhering to these 5 basic rules, we can help them navigate this period more comfortably and healthily.
